It was built by the heir to one of the most productive gold mines in history...William Bourn.
The gardens from The Wedding Planner
The Roth family (cruise line moguls) purchased it from the Bourn Family in 1930ish and later donated it to the National Trust for Historic Preservation in the 80's.
